What does a courier driver do?

The role of a courier driver is to collect a consignment (which could consist of one or multiple documents, packages, pallets etc) on behalf of the customer and deliver to a designated address or multiple addresses, whether that be across a local area or on a nationwide route.

The difference between a delivery driver and a courier is that delivery drivers are generally employed by a company and supplied with a van, whereas courier drivers usually operate courier work on a self-employed basis.

Will I need my own van for courier work?

We are looking for owner drivers that have their own vehicle or access to a suitable hire vehicle, to carry out courier work on behalf of Crown SDS. That could include anything from a small van to an extra-long wheel base – we have varied contracts that fit all van types.

Can I use my car?

We do have a number of contracts that do require cars however, the majority of our work requires you to have a van.

What van insurance do I need for courier work?

To operate as a courier, you’ll need to have hire and reward insurance in place, to enable you to use your vehicle to deliver goods, in exchange for payment. We provide Goods in Transit Insurance and Public Liability Insurance as standard!

How are the runs allocated?

Our dedicated control team will either contact you by phone or send a message direct to your phone.

Do Crown SDS use a courier app for drivers?

Yes, we have developed a driver app which you can use to show your availability and easily accept work.

What are the payment terms?

Payment terms are 24 days in arrears and then paid weekly.

What is the self-billing option?

We send weekly self-bills every Friday via email. It will give you a breakdown of your earnings and jobs completed from the previous week.

I’m hearing impaired, can I work as a driver for Crown SDS?

We have provisions in place to support drivers who are Deaf or hearing impaired.
